Oven to air fryer converter

Type the oven temperature and time from a recipe or packet. The air fryer setting appears as you type. Works in °C, °F or gas mark, for fan and conventional ovens.

The recipe’s oven setting is

UK packets often give both. A fan figure is usually about 20 °C lower; gas marks count as conventional.

Why this works

An air fryer is a small, powerful fan oven. Hot air moves fast over food that sits close to the element, so it browns and cooks quicker than in a big oven. The usual rule of thumb is to take about 20 °C (25 °F) off a conventional oven temperature and about 20% off the time. It is a starting point, not a guarantee: baskets, wattages and portion sizes vary, so check early and give it longer if it needs it. Cook in a single layer where you can; a crowded basket cooks unevenly.

*Food safety. Chicken, pork, sausages, burgers and anything minced must be cooked right through, steaming hot with no pink meat. A probe thermometer is the surest check: see the Food Standards Agency’s Cooking your food guidance for the core temperatures to aim for. If a packet gives air fryer instructions, follow those.

Questions

How do I convert an oven temperature to an air fryer temperature?

Take about 20 °C (25 °F) off a conventional oven temperature, or about 10 °C off a fan oven temperature. So 200 °C conventional becomes about 180 °C in the air fryer. Treat it as a starting point, because air fryers vary.

How do I convert oven cooking time to air fryer time?

Cut the time by about 20% and start checking a few minutes early. A 20-minute oven time becomes about 16 minutes, checked from 13 minutes.

Should I use the fan or the conventional oven temperature?

Either, as long as you pick the matching setting in the converter. A fan figure is already about 20 °C lower than a conventional one, so the converter takes off only 10 °C from a fan temperature.

Do I need to preheat an air fryer?

Many air fryers heat up in two or three minutes and a short preheat helps food crisp. Check your manual. If you skip it, allow an extra minute or two.

How long do frozen chips take in an air fryer?

If the packet says 220 °C for 20 minutes in a conventional oven, try 200 °C for about 16 minutes, shaking halfway and checking from 13 minutes. If the packet gives air fryer instructions, follow those instead.

Can I print an air fryer conversion chart?

Yes. The chart on this page fits on one A4 sheet: use the Print chart button or your browser’s print option.
